Partners in Medicine
University of Utah

I hope that you all enjoyed the holidays and the time that you spent with family and friends. I am very excited about the upcoming year and all of the fun events that the clubs have planned. I am pleased to announce that some of our club and board positions have been filled. Please consider taking a position so that we can continue the strong traditions of Partners in Medicine.

Unfortunately we have had to postpone the Go Red Gala that we were going to host on February 6th at La Caille. Hard economic times and other issues have caused us to post pone this event; however we will reschedule and have the event at a later date.

Thank you to Jennifer Johnson who hosted our Christmas party at her home. For those of you who do not know who Jennifer is, she is the past president of the Salt Lake County Medical Society Alliance and has been a true friend to Partners. She has also hosted card making classes for us at her home. So many thanks to her and her support of our group. Please let me know if there is anything that Partners can do for you or if you have an opportunity for us.

Happy New Year!

We have a guide to SLC on the navigation bar, which I have
found very helpful in finding goods, services, and fun things to do.

Start Saving Your Shoes!

I volunteered to head up a new philanthropy project for PIM, and it’s a shoe drive! Here’s a little info: Shoes will be sent to Kibera – Africa’s second largest slum. So, when doing your spring cleaning, hang on to those old running shoes. Other types of shoes are accepted, but we’ll be partnering with an existing nonprofit organization (see www.shoe4africa.org) that is “dedicated to promoting social empowerment, health initiatives and AIDS awareness”. They do most of this by sponsoring running races & soccer leagues where donated shoes/ cleats are provided to participants, and have thereby reached communities otherwise resistant to traditional HIV/AIDS initiatives. Another goal of the organization is hookworm reduction (which they state 92% of students age 8-20 have). The intestinal worms enter the body through the feet and affect everything from a child’s cognitive development to a woman’s ability to carry a child full-term.

The Kibera slums have an incredibly high mortality rate. Your donated shoes could help decrease the rate of diseases spread through the foot, as well as drastically improve someone’s overall health, happiness, and perhaps even length of life. So, please consider donating a pair of used running shoes or cleats – and if you’re interested in coordinating a drive in your own local neighborhood, church, workplace, etc. then please contact me for info!   I'll be collecting the shoes personally, and will also coordinate pick up of collection bags with each of the club chairs.  So, please feel free to bring your used running shoes to any PIM event or activity from now through the end of September!

Thanks, Holly
